The organization that administers the GIPAP from which Filipino Ph positive CML and CD 117 or Kit Positive GIST Patients who cannot afford Glivec are able to access it.TMF’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people living with blood-related cancers worldwide. Instrumental support, like access to treatment, might extend the life of a patient, but informational and emotional support help a patient cope with the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery processes. All have a place in improving the patient’s quality of life.

TMF’s in-country advocates, known as MaxStations, are trained to provide much needed help to patients adjusting to their circumstances, specific to the country and the regional milieu. Likewise, our Seattle based team of advocates field calls from all regions of the globe and work with the families as needed.

TMF has also fostered the formation of patient groups in the communities where we operate, as a means to build community resources and provide another layer of emotional support to patients. What started several years ago, as a grass-roots effort to provide one-on-one support, one TMF staff member to one patient, has developed into a strong international advocacy network and group-to-group support as patient groups inspire each other. TMF too takes inspiration from these groups and is dedicated to maintaining and improving this network as an invaluable resource in our global community.

What exactly is Friends Of Max (FOM) and who are the people behind it?

As described elsewhere as well, FOM consists of individuals impacted directly/indirectly by CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) or GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor), in short FOM consists of people and families who are impacted by health defects, which are difficult to spell and pronounce (Try spelling the expanded forms of CML and GIST without Google to help you).

Self supported and organized by these impacted souls, today there are thousands of active members of the Friends of Max, mostly all of them GIPAP recipients, spread out in 6 chapters throughout India. We meet regularly for mutual support and educational sessions (which is invariably followed by food, music and a display of ‘aliveness’ that would give most of you goose pimples).

Once a year, we organize an All India Friends of Max meeting with the slogan “Together We Share and Learn”; we invite a panel of distinguished physicians who lead a three hour educational session for participants who are primarily patients and their care givers.

MY MAX FAMILY in Malaysia

Formed in July 2006 by local CML patients, Max Family aims to make a difference in the life of people living with CML by helping them to overcome challenges and improve their quality of life. Max Family supports and helps CML patients by providing information on CML, focusing on the emotional and psychosocial aspects of the disease and advising on various job opportunities (which could help improve patients’ financial status). This support group also promotes self-empowerment and advocacy among patients, care givers and their family members.
